Product review based soley on Consumer Reports review of like products. Have not installed this as yet, but will do so while additional electrical work is being done in our house.

In fairness, I should say right from the top that I can neither recommend nor discourage the purchase of this unit. The thermostat arrived DOA — in the DEAD OF WINTER!

A word to the wise: most Ace Hardware stores are now independent and no longer carry this model; if you want to buy this item, you’ll probably have to do it via Amazon/acehardwareoutlet…a roundabout method that may prove disasterous in a cold climate (like Chicago). Neither Lowes nor Home Depot carry it, either. My advice: unless you live in Hawaii, buy your next thermostat from your local hardware or heating/plumbing store.

While it is easy to install and program, this thermostat uses bang-bang control (i.e. it either turns the heat full ON, or OFF) with a large hysteresis. This means if you set the temperature to i.e. 68 F, the heat will remain full ON until the room reaches 70. Then it will turn off until temperature drops below 66 before repeating the cycle. Turns out I can control the temperature better myself, to prevent the hot-cold shivers, I have to keep adjusting the temperature manually.

A sensible thermostat would use some type of modulation, turning the heat on at intervals to maintain a steady temperature. The instruction sheet claims this thermostat would do that, but it doesn’t.
